Goals with Soul: Intentions That Stick All Year Long!

“Your goals don’t care how you feel; they care about what you do.” — Unknown
Ah, the new year. That magical time when we all swear this year will be the year. We make lofty resolutions: eat healthier, save money, travel more, and maybe even be a better human. But then February rolls around, and reality hits. Gym memberships gather dust, savings accounts stay empty, and the “new you” starts to feel suspiciously like the old you.
Why do resolutions fail so often? Because they’re all vibes, no strategy. A resolution without an action plan is like starting a road trip without a map — you’re not getting anywhere.
Instead of setting vague resolutions like “get fit” or “be happier,” let’s flip the script. This year, we’re not just making resolutions; we’re setting intentions and actionable goals that are tied to a plan. Intrigued? Let’s break it down.
Step 1: Break Your Life Into Categories
Think of your life as a delicious pizza (because, why not?). Each slice represents a different part of you. Here are 6–8 categories to consider:
- Career
- Relationships
- Finances
- Health
- Travel
- Personal Development
- Friends and Family
- Hobbies or Passion Projects
Now, take a moment to reflect on where you are in each area. Which slices feel a little thin? Which ones are overflowing with extra cheese?
This reflection will help you identify the areas you want to prioritize in the coming year.

Step 2: Choose Your Top Two Goals for Each Area
Here’s the secret sauce: pick two goals per area, and more importantly, figure out why they matter to you.
- Want to save money? Why? So you can finally book that dream trip to Italy.
- Want to improve your relationships? Why? Because connection is the foundation of a fulfilling life.
- Want to get fit? Why? So you can run around with your kids without feeling winded.
When motivation dips (and trust me, it will), your why becomes your anchor. It’s the fuel that keeps the engine running when you’re tempted to hit snooze on your goals.
Step 3: Build Your Goal Framework
For each goal, map out these four things:
- Timeline: When do you want to achieve this by? Be specific. “Save money” isn’t enough — say “Save $5,000 by December 2024.”
- Actions: Break your goal into small, actionable steps. Want to eat healthier? Start with “Meal prep every Sunday” or “Add one vegetable to every meal.”
- Your Input: What will you do to make this happen? Goals aren’t about wishing — they’re about working.
- Expected Outcome: What will achieving this goal look and feel like? Visualize it. Write it down.
Step 4: Visualize and Keep Your Goals Front and Center
Now that you’ve set your goals, it’s time to make them your North Star. Write them down, create a vision board, or pin them somewhere you’ll see them daily — your desk, your mirror, or even as your phone wallpaper. This keeps your goals top of mind and reminds you why you’re putting in the effort.
Step 5: The Science Behind Why This Works
Here’s where it gets nerdy (but cool): setting specific goals with actionable steps taps into your brain’s Reticular Activating System (RAS). This fancy little system acts like a filter, helping you notice opportunities and resources that align with your goals.
For example, if your goal is to buy a house, suddenly you’ll start noticing “For Sale” signs everywhere, or you’ll stumble across budgeting tips online. It’s not magic — it’s science. Your brain is wired to focus on what you tell it to prioritize.
Why This Works: From Wishful Thinking to Manifestation
When you break your goals into categories and tie them to actions, they stop being abstract wishes and start becoming tangible steps. You’re not just saying, “I want to be healthier”; you’re saying, “I will work out for 20 minutes three times a week because I want to feel stronger.”
The key here is intention + action = manifestation. It’s not enough to hope for something — you have to show up for it.
Why I am a preacher ? (Because I’ve Been There Too)
A few years ago, I decided to set intentional goals for the first time. I broke my life into categories, chose two priorities for each, and mapped out my action plan. One of my goals was to grow my career. My why? I wanted to create a life where I could spend more time with my family while doing work I loved.
I set a timeline: “Get promoted within the next 12 months.”
My action plan? Upskill through an online course, network with mentors, and take on a challenging project.
Every time I felt overwhelmed, I came back to my why. And you know what? It worked.

8 Steps to Set and Stick to Your Goals
- Reflect on Your Life: Identify areas where you want growth.
- Choose Two Goals per Area: Focus on what truly matters to you.
- Define Your Why: Your motivation will carry you through tough days.
- Set a Timeline: Deadlines turn dreams into plans.
- Break It Down: Small steps create big results.
- Visualize the Outcome: Picture what success looks like — it keeps you inspired.
- Keep Your Goals Visible: Make them a daily reminder.
- Celebrate Progress: Small wins matter. Acknowledge every step forward.
But What If It Feels Like Too Much?
I get it. Mapping out your entire life can feel overwhelming. But trust me, this isn’t about perfection — it’s about progress. Even if you only focus on one area or set one goal, you’re still moving forward. Remember, “What got you here won’t get you there.” Change starts from within.
Be the Change you desire
“If you want to change your life, you have to change yourself first.” — Vex King
This year, don’t just set resolutions — set intentions. Create a plan, follow through, and watch how your life transforms. It won’t be perfect, and you’ll have days when you fall off track. But that’s okay. Progress is what matters, not perfection.
Your dreams deserve your effort. So, what’s your first step?
If this resonates with you, take 10 minutes today to reflect and set your intentions. Share your top two goals in the comments — I’d love to cheer you on!
