Red Flags and Green Flags in Dating: Navigating Modern Romance
By Prerna Chandra ·
The Social Pressure and the predicaments
Ah! the dating world — a place where every swipe holds the promise of love or a hilarious story to share. But let’s be real, navigating it can feel like solving a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded.
To further add to your woes, the family gatherings doesn’t make it any easier. You’re enjoying your meal, when your well-meaning aunt leans in with that all-too-familiar question, “So, when are you getting married?” You laugh it off, but inside, the social pressure is palpable. We’ve all been there and some are still — feeling the societal expectations to find a partner and settle down.
Dating in the modern age has become a bit of a rollercoaster. From swiping right in bed to ghosting by breakfast, the landscape has dramatically changed, leaving many of us wondering why it’s so challenging to find a partner who truly resonates with us.

The Evolution of Dating: The Swipe Culture
“Love is not about how many days, months, or years you’ve been together. It’s all about how much you love each other every single day.” — Anonymous
With the rise of dating apps, we now have access to thousands of potential matches at our fingertips. This abundance of choice can lead to “the paradox of choice,” where we are always looking for the next best thing. This behaviour often prevents us from truly investing in getting to know someone, fostering genuine connections, and being self-aware in the process.
Red Flags That Are Actually Green Flags
Navigating the dating world involves recognizing what behaviours and traits are truly indicative of a compatible partner. Here’s a guide to help you discern:
Common Red Flags That Might Actually Be Green Flags:
- Not Texting Constantly: This could indicate that they respect your space and are secure enough to not need constant communication.
- Having Different Hobbies: This shows they have a well-rounded life and are not overly dependent on you for fulfillment.
- Being Honest About Their Flaws: Transparency about imperfections can signify a high level of self-awareness and authenticity.
Green Flags That Might Actually Be Red Flags:
- Over-The-Top Romance Early On: Excessive grand gestures early in the relationship can sometimes mask deeper insecurities or manipulative tendencies.
- Agreeing with Everything You Say: A lack of personal opinions or constant agreement might indicate people-pleasing tendencies rather than genuine compatibility.
- Moving Too Fast: While it might feel exciting, rushing into things can be a sign of underlying issues such as fear of loneliness or a need for validation.
Building blocks for Successful Dating
Though I may not be a dating expert, here are some frameworks to help you navigate the dating landscape more thoughtfully:
- List Your Negotiables and Non-Negotiables:
- Clearly outline the traits and values that are essential in a partner versus those you can compromise on. This helps set clear expectations and boundaries.
2. Understand Your Attachment Style:
- Knowing whether you are secure, anxious, or avoidant in relationships can help you understand your behavior patterns and improve your interactions with potential partners.
3. Avoid Immediate Gratification:
“Good things come to those who wait.” — Proverb
- Take the time to truly get to know someone. Depth often reveals itself over time, not in the first few dates.
The Temptation of the Ex: A Cautionary Tale
“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”
— Alexander Graham Bell
Sometimes, in moments of loneliness, the idea of rekindling a relationship with an ex can seem appealing. However, unless you have resolved past issues and have genuine reasons to reconnect, this can be a big mistake. It’s crucial to remember that revisiting old chapters can prevent you from moving forward and opening new, potentially more fulfilling ones.
The 90’s Kid Conundrum and Moving Forward
As a 90’s kid, you might find yourself particularly challenged by the evolving dynamics of dating. Straddling the line between traditional methods and the digital age can be confusing. However, by taking thoughtful steps and trusting yourself, you can navigate this new landscape with confidence.
“Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.” — Benjamin Spock
While there are many self-acclaimed love gurus and endless advice, my two cents are to follow your heart, make mistakes, and learn from them. There is no fixed formula or right path in love. Each journey is unique and carved out by the experiences and lessons learned along the way.
So, take a deep breath, laugh off the pressure, and step into the dating world with an open heart and mind. Your perfect match is out there, waiting for you to find them amidst the swipes and messages.
Happy dating!
